Published current draw. Engel publishes "DC Power Consumption: Variable from 0.5 - 3.0 AMPS" for the MT-V45, with no duty cycle and no ambient temperature stated. That is a 6-fold band rather than a running current, and Engel publishes no 24 hour average to check it against.
Warranty as written. Snowys lists a split term on the MT-V45J: 5 years on the compressor and swing motor, and 3 years on the power supply, temperature control assembly, thermistors and fan motor. Engel Australia's own site is inconsistent, with the portable category page stating 5 years and the About page still stating 3, and no warranty terms document could be located on its public site.
Australian service and parts. Engel Distribution Pty Ltd of Eagle Farm, QLD is a 100% owned subsidiary of the Japanese manufacturer Sawafuji Electric, so parts and warranty repair sit with an entity the factory owns outright rather than with an independent importer. Engel runs a searchable service agent locator with a 5 km to 100 km radius filter and states that parts fitted by an unauthorised repairer will not carry the full Engel warranty. What this page is, and what it is not
We do not physically test the fridges compared here. Nobody at Outback Rated has handled any of them, and the honesty header at the top of this page says so in the same typeface as every other specification on it.
Every figure comes from a manufacturer specification, an Australian retailer’s own live listing, a published warranty document or documented owner feedback, and each one carries the date it was observed. Where a specification does not exist in public, the field is left empty and the gap is named. We would rather publish a hole than a number that reads well. Only 6 of the 10 units even name or describe their compressor, which tells you something about the category before you compare anything.
What we do bring is the other half of the decision: how a 12V system behaves in a real vehicle, and what actually matters when the nearest help is a day’s drive away. That is worth a great deal on system design and nothing at all on whether a specific fridge we have never owned is any good, so this page never pretends otherwise. More on who writes this and why.
How these 10 were chosen
Every product had to be observed in an Australian retailer's own live listing on a stated date, with the product name, URL slug and price recorded as displayed. Nothing was included from memory or from a manufacturer's marketing page alone.
Preference went to brands with an identifiable Australian entity standing behind the warranty and a published parts or service path, because a fridge that fails 900 km from a capital city is a logistics problem before it is a warranty problem.
Published power figures were only used where the test conditions came with them. A figure measured at 25C is not comparable with one measured at 32C, and any model without stated conditions is recorded as having no usable figure rather than being given a flattering one.
Warranty is recorded as it is actually written, including component splits and retailer-versus-manufacturer disagreements, rather than reduced to a single headline number. Where a term could not be sourced, no term is stated.
Genuine price coverage was a hard requirement. The fridge set spans roughly $850 to $1,850 as at July 2026, so a reader with $900 gets a real recommendation rather than being told to save up.
Picks are made against use cases (a touring couple, a canopy build, a drawer system, dual zone, extended remote travel, a tight vehicle space, best value) rather than ranked 1 to 10, because the right fridge is decided by the vehicle and the trip, not by a score.
Form factor and physical fit were treated as decision inputs, not footnotes: chest, upright and drawer units are compared against each other rather than split across separate pages.
Nothing was included that could not be sourced. Where a specification, a warranty term or a compressor make is unknown, the field is left empty and the gap is named on the page.
How to size a fridge and its power system for your trip
This is the section most ranking pages skip or get wrong. One page currently ranking for this search states that 500Wh can power a 40W fridge for 10 hours, which treats a compressor fridge as a constant load. That is not how the thing works. A compressor fridge cycles: it draws its running current only while the compressor is on, and how often that happens is the whole game.
Step 1: work out amp-hours per day
The formula is Ah per day = running current (A) x 24 (h) x duty cycle, written as a decimal. To turn that into watt-hours, multiply by system voltage, using 12.8V nominal for a LiFePO4 bank and about 12.0V for lead acid under load.
Australian retailers apply it identically. Snowys works a fridge drawing 2.5A that runs half the day out to 30 amp hours. Battery Force defines average fridge load as fridge draw multiplied by duty cycle, with a worked example of 4.0A at 40% duty giving a 1.6A average.
The duty cycle assumptions used on this page are stated rather than assumed. National Luna, a manufacturer whose fridges are also sold here, published guidance for a single-compartment fridge with 60mm insulation set to +4C internal: the compressor ran 18% to 20% of the time at a 21C ambient, 25% to 30% at 32C, and 30% to 50% at 43C. Bluetti Australia quotes up to 80% above 35C. Interpolating the National Luna table to 35C gives roughly 26% to 35%, so a jump from mild to genuinely extreme roughly doubles duty cycle, while an ordinary hot day is a much smaller step than that. Anything between those published points is an interpolation, and it is labelled here as an assumption rather than as a figure.
Step 2: use the published average where one exists
Where a brand publishes an average across a full cycle, that figure is already duty-cycle inclusive, so converting it is a single multiplication by 24. This only holds for the row a brand explicitly labels as an average. It does not hold for a nameplate rating and it does not hold for a maximum.
Dometic CFX5 45 Portable Fridge/Freezer 46L: 0.76 Ah/h x 24 = 18.2 Ah per day, or about 233 Wh at 12.8V. Conditions: 12V, 4C set point, 32C ambient, Bluetooth on, WiFi off.
Bushman 50L Heavy Duty Upright DC50-X HD: 0.98 Amp/hr x 24 = 23.5 Ah per day, or about 301 Wh at 12.8V. Conditions: 25C ambient, 4C fridge. That figure is recorded against the DC50-X, so confirm it applies to the Heavy Duty variant before you plan a battery around it.
Those 2 numbers must not be ranked against each other. The first was taken at an ambient 7C hotter, which is the harder condition, and the difference between the conditions is larger than the difference between the numbers.
Do not use a nameplate rating this way. The same Dometic model also lists a rated input current of 9.4A at 12V. Multiply that by 24 and you get a number many times too high, and a battery bank several times larger than you need.
Step 3: where no average is published, use the duty-cycle method
For the other 8 units on this page there is no published average, so the only honest approach is to work the arithmetic yourself and state the assumption you used.
Engel MT-V45J 40L Fridge Freezer, using the top of its own published band at 3.0A, at a 32C ambient and a 30% duty cycle: 3.0 x 24 x 0.30 = 21.6 Ah per day, or about 276 Wh at 12.8V.
The same unit on a 43C day with frequent lid openings at a 50% duty cycle: 3.0 x 24 x 0.50 = 36 Ah per day, or about 461 Wh at 12.8V.
A 60L class fridge drawing 4.5A at a 40% duty cycle: 4.5 x 24 x 0.40 = 43.2 Ah per day, or about 553 Wh at 12.8V.
Step 4: apply an Australian summer allowance
Published averages are a best case for the ambient they were taken at. There is no reliable single multiplier for converting a 25C figure into a 35C one, and anyone offering you one is guessing. National Luna’s own bands imply daily draw can rise by roughly 1.3 to 1.7 times across the step from 21C to 32C, and the 43C band is wider again, so a sensible hot weather planning allowance is 1.5 to 2 times the published average. That is a budgeting buffer, not a measurement.
Cross-checking that against published Australian guidance for a 40L to 60L fridge: retailer and installer calculators assuming roughly a 40% duty cycle land at 20 to 40 Ah per day, while guides written around Australian heat land at 40 to 60 Ah per day. Plan on the first band for mild conditions and design to the second. At 12.8V the design case is roughly 512 to 768 Wh per day for the fridge alone, before lights, device charging and conversion losses.
Step 5: size the battery on usable capacity, not rated capacity
This is where most setups fail.
Lead acid and AGM. Snowys states a deep cycle lead acid battery should not be run below about 50% of charge, which it puts at roughly 12.2V to 12.3V. A 120Ah AGM therefore gives about 60 Ah usable, or roughly 720 Wh. Against a fridge using 30 Ah per day that is 2 days. Against the summer design case of 50 Ah per day it is about 1 day.
LiFePO4. Australian suppliers put the working figure at 80% to 90% of rated capacity, so a 100Ah LiFePO4 delivers about 80 to 90 Ah usable, roughly 1,150 Wh at 90%. The same 30 Ah per day load gives about 2.7 to 3 days.
The voltage behaviour is the sharper problem, not the capacity. Lead acid sits at roughly 12.0V to 12.2V at that 50% point, which is close enough to a fridge’s low voltage cut-out that the fridge can shut down overnight while the battery still reads as having charge in it. Lithium holds far higher voltage far deeper into the discharge. That is the difference between waking up to a cold fridge and waking up to a warm one.
A published Australian sizing formula: daily Ah multiplied by days of autonomy, divided by 0.8, then multiplied by 1.2 for a safety buffer. Designing to 3 days sits at the top of the usual Australian target range of 2 to 3 days, not at the floor.
Step 6: size the solar
Panel watts required = Wh per day divided by (peak sun hours x system efficiency). Take a fridge using 30 Ah per day from a 12.8V lithium battery, which is 384 Wh per day. At 4.5 peak sun hours and a 0.75 derate for regulator losses, cable losses, panel heat and imperfect orientation, that is 384 / (4.5 x 0.75) = 114W.
On those assumptions, roughly 120W of panel only breaks even on a good day, and somewhere around 160W to 200W is where you get real margin for dust, cloud, shade and a flat-mounted panel that points wherever the vehicle points.
Change the peak sun hours and the answer moves a long way. Published Australian capital city figures put winter peak sun hours at about 2.5 to 3.5 in Melbourne and Hobart, about 3.5 to 4.5 in Sydney and Adelaide, and about 5.0 to 6.0 in Darwin, against annual averages of roughly 4.0 to 6.5. At 3 peak sun hours the same 384 Wh per day load needs about 171W, so 200W is not overkill for a southern winter.
For a sanity check against manufacturer guidance, OZtrail publishes 80W to 100W for a fridge under 40L, 120W to 160W for a 40L to 60L fridge and 160W to 200W for 60L and above, explicitly assuming 4 to 5 peak sun hours per day and fridge-only use.
Step 7: do not run the fridge through an inverter
This is the single most common unnecessary purchase in a touring 12V build. Running a 12V compressor fridge through a 240V inverter converts 12V up to 240V so the fridge’s own power brick can convert it back down, and you pay for both conversions. The published spread on that penalty runs from roughly 10% to 60% more energy per day, depending on whether the fridge’s AC brick is in circuit and how hard the fridge is working.
There is a second cost most people never see. Leaving the AC output switched on draws power around the clock before anything is plugged in. Victron publishes roughly 8W to 12W no-load draw on a 1,000W to 1,450W class 230V inverter and around 20W on a 2,400W class unit. Left on for a full camp day, 8W to 12W is roughly 190 Wh to 290 Wh gone to an inverter doing no work at all.
Buy an inverter for a power tool, a coffee machine or a CPAP. Run the fridge off DC, and switch the AC output off. Those are 2 separate mistakes, each costing real capacity. What to run the fridge from instead is compared on the portable power station and dual battery comparison.
On capacity itself
This part is editorial judgement rather than a sourced figure: work backwards from how you actually shop rather than from litres per person. If you resupply every 3 to 5 days and you are cooking for 2, the 40L to 46L band in this comparison is the sweet spot, and it is where the market has concentrated for a reason. Go bigger when you are carrying meat for a week, feeding more than 2, or you genuinely need a freezer running at the same time. Go smaller when the constraint is the hole in your vehicle, because a fridge that does not fit is a 0L fridge.
The Australian factors that decide this
Warranty is not the same thing as your rights
Under Australian Consumer Law, consumer guarantees are automatic and cannot be taken away, and a manufacturer’s warranty is an extra promise a business chooses to make on top of them. The ACCC puts it plainly: warranties are extra promises, not a substitute for the guarantees. A warranty card that has expired does not end the conversation, and a returns policy that quietly offers less than the warranty advertised on the product page does not override the advertised warranty either.
There is an honest limit to this. The ACCC also states there are no set rules for how long a product should last, so nobody, including us, can tell you that a fridge at the top of the bands on this page is guaranteed to last a specific number of years. What is reasonable depends on the price, the description and the type of product.
The practical version: keep your invoice, because it is the proof of purchase a claim runs on. If the brand cannot or will not repair the fault within a reasonable time, the ACCC’s stated position is that you can have it done elsewhere and be paid back the reasonable cost of the repair. Freight is the cost no warranty length captures. None of the fridge brands above publishes who pays to get a heavy unit to an agent. For a buyer a long way from a capital city, that silence is the part worth reading before you buy, because a 30 kg fridge is not a cheap parcel.
The 12V side of your vehicle
The fridge is the easy part. The system around it is where trips get ruined, and that system is the half of this decision where genuine experience counts for something.
Heat, ventilation and corrugations
Ambient temperature is one of the biggest swing factors in what a fridge costs you in amp-hours, but it is not the only one. Set point, lid-opening frequency, whether the condenser can breathe and whether the fridge starts warm or already cold all move the number.
There are 2 practical consequences. A fridge boxed into a drawer system or a cavity with no airflow is a fridge working harder than its specification sheet ever assumed, which is exactly why the upright and drawer formats in this comparison specify ventilation clearance and the chest units are not meant to be installed in cavities at all. And pre-chill at home on mains power before you leave, because pulling a warm box down to temperature on the first day is the most expensive thing you will ask of it all trip.
On corrugations, the honest position is that Engel makes a specific published claim here and nobody else in this set does: the swing motor has one moving part, no bearings, cranks or con-rods, operates at 30 degree angles and on rough corrugated tracks without losing efficiency, and has no high start-up current draw. That is a manufacturer statement rather than a figure we produced, and no comparable published data exists for the other compressors here. Read it as a documented design intent, not as a proven durability ranking.
Whatever you buy, restrain it properly. A loaded fridge is a heavy object, and Australia’s load restraint standard for light vehicles exists precisely because unrestrained loads move in a crash. Use tie-down points, not hope.
Fridge versus icebox, answered honestly
The 12V fridge wins this argument most of the time, and it wins it for reasons specific to this country. It holds temperature indefinitely as long as you can feed it power, it does not care whether the nearest town sells ice, and it does not fill a third of its own volume with the thing keeping it cold.
Here is where an icebox still genuinely wins, and it is not a short list.
On purchase price and total system cost. A fridge is never a standalone purchase. It needs a battery, usually a DC-DC charger, cable and connectors, often solar, and frequently a cover and a slide. The cheapest fridge in this comparison sits in the $800 to $900 band and the dearest in the $1,750 to $1,850 band, and a working power system behind either is another substantial spend. An icebox costs what it costs and needs nothing else.
On weight, simplicity and failure modes. An icebox has no compressor to seize, no control board to fail, no thermistor to drift and no low voltage cut-out to nuisance-trip at 3am. It cannot flatten your starter battery. For a weekend away 2 hours from home, that reliability argument is real.
As a second box. The most common genuinely correct answer for a touring couple is not one or the other. It is a single zone fridge for the food you cannot afford to lose plus a cheap icebox for drinks, which keeps the drinks out of the fridge and stops half your lid openings from happening in the first place.
The break-even is a formula rather than a headline number, because ice prices vary enormously by where you are and we could not verify a current Australian retail price per bag from a source we trust.

Fill it in with the ice price at your own servo and your own realistic number of trips. Someone doing 30 nights a year near town gets a very different answer to someone doing a lap.
The Australian constraint settles it for remote travel. Ice retention claims on iceboxes are best-case figures and they generally assume a heavy ice-to-product ratio that destroys the usable-capacity comparison. More importantly, they assume you can buy more ice. On the Simpson, the Canning Stock Route, the Gibb River Road or Cape York, you cannot, for days at a time. That single fact is what pushes most serious remote travel onto a compressor fridge regardless of what the break-even arithmetic says.
Common questions
What size 12V fridge do I actually need?
Work backwards from how often you resupply rather than from a litres-per-person rule. For 2 people restocking every 3 to 5 days, the 40L to 46L band covers it, which is where most of this comparison sits. Go bigger if you are feeding more than 2, carrying a week of meat, or you genuinely need a freezer running at the same time.
Then check that the box physically fits, with clearance to open the lid or pull the drawer, before you check anything else. A fridge that does not fit your vehicle is not a compromise, it is a return.
How much power does a 12V fridge use per day?
For a 40L to 60L fridge, published Australian guidance splits into 2 bands: roughly 20 to 40 Ah per day in mild conditions, and roughly 40 to 60 Ah per day as the Australian summer design case. At 12.8V that summer case is about 512 to 768 Wh per day for the fridge alone, before lights, device charging and conversion losses.
Where your model publishes a genuine 24 hour average, use that instead. The 2 models here that do work out to about 18.2 Ah per day at a 32C ambient and about 23.5 Ah per day at a 25C ambient respectively, and those 2 figures are not comparable with each other. Then add a hot weather allowance of 1.5 to 2 times as a budgeting buffer rather than as a measurement.
Why is amps per hour the wrong unit?
Because it is not a unit at all, and the error is everywhere in this category. Amps is already a rate. The 2 measures that mean something are amps drawn while the compressor is running, and amp-hours consumed per 24 hours.
When a specification sheet reports an average of 0.76 Ah/h, it is telling you average current draw multiplied by running time, which is a genuine 24 hour average you can multiply by 24. When a listing says 1 to 3 amps per hour, nobody has thought about what they wrote.
Can I run a 12V fridge off my starter battery?
For a night, in mild weather, with a healthy battery and a low voltage cut-out set correctly, probably. As a system, no.
A starter battery is built to deliver a huge current for a few seconds, not a modest current for 3 days, and deep-cycling one repeatedly will kill it. Run a fridge off a dedicated auxiliary battery, charged by a DC-DC charger from the alternator and topped up by solar. That is the standard Australian touring answer for a reason.
How long will a 100Ah battery run a fridge?
It depends entirely on chemistry, because rated capacity is not usable capacity. A 100Ah AGM should not go below about 50% of charge, so call it 50 Ah usable, or roughly 1.7 days against a fridge using 30 Ah per day. A 100Ah LiFePO4 gives about 80 to 90 Ah usable, so about 2.7 to 3 days against the same load.
In an Australian summer at 50 Ah per day those figures fall to about 1 day and about 1.6 to 1.8 days respectively. Size for the worse case, not the brochure case.
Is a dual zone fridge worth it?
Only if you genuinely need a freezer running at the same time as a fridge, and only if you understand that the freezer volume comes out of the fridge volume rather than being added to it. The best documented dual zone in this comparison is listed as 70L split 40/30, which means a 40L fridge.
Freezing also costs more energy for 2 stacked reasons: the compressor is less efficient at a lower evaporating temperature, and a -18C compartment is fighting a much larger temperature difference to ambient through the same insulation. For 2 people, a single zone plus better packing is often the better buy. Note too that dual zone describes at least 3 different engineering approaches in this market, so read the manual for the exact model.
Which brand has the best warranty in Australia?
The question is badly formed, because none of these terms is a single number. The longest headline on the page is 7 years and it covers the compressor only, on 2026 model and later units, with a minimum of 3 years on the rest.
One brand's Australian retailer listing splits 5 years on the compressor and swing motor against 3 years on the electronics, while that brand's own site contradicts itself at 5 years on one page and 3 years on another. Another brand's 5 years is retailer-stated rather than manufacturer-confirmed, because its Australian warranty statements page publishes no fixed period for portables at all. A further 2 brands here publish no schedule we could confirm.
Read the warranty card that comes with the specific unit you are handed, and keep the invoice.
What happens if it fails a long way from a shop?
It becomes a logistics problem before it becomes a warranty problem, which is the whole reason this page treats service structure as a first-order specification rather than a footnote.
Before you buy, look up the nearest authorised agent for the brand you are considering and ask how far that is from where you actually travel. Then ask who pays the freight, because none of the fridge brands here publishes an answer, and a 30 kg fridge is not a cheap parcel.
Chest, upright or drawer?
Decide it on your vehicle, not on a preference. A chest is the cheapest and most common format and it needs clear space above the lid, which is exactly what a canopy shelf, a drawer run or a low tailgate takes away.
An upright is right when the fridge lives in a cavity you open from the front, which describes most campers, canopies and caravans, and it needs specified ventilation clearance. A drawer solves the same access problem in a canopy but buys that convenience with wall thickness and usable volume, so 40L on the badge is a smaller working space than 40L in a chest. Measure the hole first.
Are the cheap house-brand fridges a mistake?
They are absent from this comparison for 2 reasons, and only 1 of them is quality. First, they are single-channel house brands that cannot be bought through the retailer this site compares against, so we cannot price-check them against anything.
Second, the warranty picture on that tier is genuinely inconsistent. One house brand advertises a 5 year warranty on a 45L unit while the same retailer's published returns policy offers a voluntary 12 month warranty against manufacturing defects. Under Australian Consumer Law a business must honour a warranty it advertises, and consumer guarantees continue after any voluntary warranty expires, so a 12 month policy page does not cancel a 5 year promise on a product page.
Read owner review scores carefully too. The budget tier rates poorly, but so does 1 premium range in this comparison, and a low average on a self-selected sample is not a reliability ranking.
Should I buy an inverter to run the fridge?
No. Running a 12V compressor fridge through a 240V inverter adds a conversion loss on top of the fridge's own AC power brick, and the published spread on that penalty runs from roughly 10% to 60% more energy per day.
Leaving the AC output switched on adds an idle draw around the clock. Manufacturer figures for a 1,000W to 1,450W class 230V inverter put no-load draw at roughly 8W to 12W, which is roughly 190Wh to 290Wh across a full day doing nothing at all. Buy an inverter if you need 240V for a tool, a coffee machine or a medical device, and run the fridge off DC.
What to do next
Work out your daily amp-hours first, using the arithmetic above and your own fridge’s published figure if it has one. That number decides your battery, your solar and whether you need a DC-DC charger, and it is the only number on this page that changes the size of your spend.
