Outback Rated: Australian research on 12V camping fridges and touring power

We compare what the spec sheets, the Australian warranty documents and the retail listings actually say, for people running a fridge off a dual-battery system a long way from the nearest shop. We do not physically test the products on this site, and every page says so.

Why this site exists

Most of what ranks for “best 12V fridge in Australia” is written offshore, or by a retailer selling the gear, or by a site claiming testing it never evidences. We are none of those, and we are upfront about the trade-off: Outback Rated does not physically test the products it compares.

What we do instead is the Australian work almost nobody else bothers with. Which company legally answers a warranty claim here. Where the nearest service agent is, and whether parts are held in the country. What a published current-draw figure actually means once you put it behind a dual-battery system in Australian summer heat. What the gear costs at Australian retailers, as a band, with the date we checked it.

Who writes this

What we do not do

  • We do not physically test these products. Nothing here is written as though we have handled a unit, taken one away for a weekend, or measured anything ourselves.
  • We do not take free product, loaned units, sponsored placements or paid rankings. No brand can pay to appear on this site, or to appear higher on it.
  • We do not publish star ratings or scores we have not earned. A number out of 5 implies a test we did not run.
  • We do not publish precise prices. Street prices in this category move within weeks, so we publish a band with the date we checked it, currently as at July 2026.
  • We do not pretend to cover everything. Every comparison states which brands and models were in scope and which were not.
  • We do not repeat a specification we cannot source. If it is not on a manufacturer, distributor or Australian retailer page we can point you to, it does not go on the page.

What we do take: a commission when a reader buys through some of the retailer links on our comparison pages, at no extra cost to the reader. It never changes the order of a comparison, and it is disclosed on every page that carries one. The full terms are set out in our affiliate disclosure.

Every one of those rules, plus the sources we read, the arithmetic we use and how often we re-check a price, is set out in full: how we research and where the figures come from.
